The man walking away from pain

“Even in the darkest of places
where grey and black swallow laughter
the heart carries hope
small, tiny, almost absent
but still very much alive.”

This dark shadow.
That makes shades of rain
and cold wet of shoulders hunched
against the shivers of harsh lessons.

This dark shadow.
Eyeing the lines of black
sameness of stern
bleakness of passage.

“This day I will change”
Hunch my shoulders and turn.
Find my own truths,
my own path.

“This day I will change”
Become by minute increments
a footstep in the opposite direction.
Hands in pockets
to stop resolve from crumbling.

“This day I will change”
Though, my shadow is still dark
it is  more grey
not black.
and that is enough to show me
where lighter shades reside.

Love will find my heart
and lead it home.
