If wishes were fishes

If wishes were fishes, we’d all cast nets
Line up our horses, and place all our bets.
If wishes were fishes, we’d have us a fry.
And all the hungry beggars
Would eat til we die.
If wishes were fishes,
then beggars would ride
with swords worn like watches
held here at my side.
And wonders would listen,
just to be polite,
and the broom would sweep stairways
each floor and each flight.
And each wish would amass
like stars in the night.
If wishes were fishes,
We’d all take a bite.

(I’ve heard this saying all my life from my Irish grandfather on down my family line and decided to make it into a proper poem)
